[edit] Internet2
In addition to providing outreach and building awareness through contributions to the CI Days effort, Internet2 serves as a "neutral convener", bringing together thought leaders representing a wide range of disciplines from our member organizations and the broader education community. This community of collaboration traverses disciplinary and institutional boundaries to advance the frontiers of high-performance networking in service of research and education. Some of the discipline areas where Internet2 community members engage in discovery, research, and collaboration include:
- Science and Engineering Initiative -- Internet2 Members in the science and engineering communities are using high-performance networking for interactive collaboration; distributed data storage and data mining; large-scale, multi-site computation; real-time access to remote resources; dynamic data visualization, and shared virtual reality. The science and engineering communities are also actively engaged in Internet2's middleware and network performance initiatives, among others. Russ Hobby is the Internet2 Program Manager for Science and Engineering.
- Arts and Humanities Initiative -- This outreach program assists Internet2 members in enabling and advancing collaborations between high performance networking technologies and applications in the arts and humanities. The Arts and Humanitites Initiative focuses on enabling collaborative live performances, master classes, and remote auditions in the performing arts. Outreach is underway to the museum and library community, film departments, and language instruction centers, and partnerships have been formed with vendors to foster development in these arenas. Ann Doyle is the Internet2 Program Manager for Arts and Humanities.
- Health Sciences Initiative -- The Internet2 Health Sciences Initiative supports and facilitates the use of advanced networking applications in clinical practice, medical and related biological research, education, and health awareness. Doctors are gaining access to specialists for remote consultations, students are learning anatomy with the support of new tools and technologies, and smart databases are assisting with diagnosis and knowledge sharing among researchers. These advancements are made possible by Internet2’s advanced networks and the emerging technologies that facilitate the secure transfer of large data sets and access to shared resources. Mike McGill is the Internet2 Program Director for Health Sciences.
- Working Groups and SIGs -- Development activities of Internet2 are performed by Internet2 members who are active in Working Groups (WG), Special Interest Groups (SIG), or Advisory Groups (AG). Strong functional WGs are an integral part of the Internet2 community and provide intellectual capital and shared will to develop solutions. Through this framework for collaboration, active working groups are addressing relevant issues in advanced networking technologies and applications.
Some examples of Internet2's Working Groups and SIGs include:
-- Presence and Integrated Communications WG
-- SIP.edu WG
-- IPv6 WG
-- Collaboration SIG
-- Archaeology SIG
-- High Energy and Nuclear Physics SIG
-- Teaching and Learning SIG
-- VoIP SIG
-- Health Sciences Education SIG
