[edit] Open Science Grid

OSG's Virtual Data Toolkit (VDT) provides packaged, tested and supported collections of software called "middleware" since it sits between the resources and the applications that run on them. Individual research communities, the Virtual Organizations (VOs), add services according to their scientists' needs.

OSG's VDT middleware is the "brains" of the grid. It does all the work to connect users' jobs to computing resources, thereby hiding the grid's complexity from the user. It has the unenviable job of making many different networks and resources appear unified.

OSG's VDT middleware is available for installation on participating compute and storage nodes. There is a complementary client package for end-user researchers. See Getting Started on OSG.

End users, belonging to VOs, run their own applications on OSG resources, submitting jobs to the middleware.

The OSG Documentation Hub provides pointers to instructions for downloading and installing OSG software.

[edit] Internet2

The Internet2 Commons Remote Collaboration Services provide a large-scale deployment of tools for one-to-one, one-to-group, and group-to-group collaborations enabling the Internet2 research and education community to hold distributed working groups, classes, meetings, and events.

The Internet2 Community has also developed an Identity and Access Management model and related software and tools for simplifying the management of access to services. See Security for more information.
