Internet2 is a not-for-profit consortium of over 200 U.S. universities, 70 corporations, 45 government agencies/labs/institutions, 30 research and education networking organizations, and 50 international networking organizations. Internet2 promotes the missions of its members by providing both leading-edge network capabilities and unique partnership opportunities that together facilitate the development, deployment and use of revolutionary Internet technologies.

Role in CCI days: Participate in CCI day planning efforts, provide speakers at CCI days, provide staff support at CCI day events, and contribute to marketing and communications efforts (especially across the Internet2 member community).

What it can provide to campuses: Cyberinfrastructure offers an integrated view of all the components that constitute the advanced networking capabilities required by the research and education community. This resonates with Internet2's "systems" approach to advanced networking, and is reflected in the scope of and through coordination among Internet2's programs and activities.

  • For campus: The [Internet2 Network] will implement capabilities developed in coordination with state and regional, campus, national, and international networks that will enable the delivery of new capabilities and services to end users. These network capabilities will inform, integrate, and leverage the work underway in the Internet2 Middleware Initiative and the Internet2 End-to-End Performance Initiative.
  • For researchers: Provides network capabilities and collaboration tools/services, easier management of domain science allowing faculty and students to sample and engage in research securely and easily. Internet2 works with application communities, such as the high-energy physicists using the Large Hadron Collider, to ensure they are engaged in both the deployment and use of these new capabilities, such as dedicated circuit services.
  • Across institutions: Internet2 facilitates inter- and intra-institution collaborations via authentication and other tools.
