The NSF's new Computational and Data-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E) program is an opportunity for U.S. research universities to use Internet2's advanced network and collaboration facilities for innovation. CDS&E recognizes the importance of data-enabled, data-intensive, data-centric science, and responds to the needs of scientific computation and the explosion in digital data production. Senior higher education executives announced at the Spring 2012 Internet2 Member Meeting that they will use the nation's fastest coast-to-coast network to implement new technologies that support scientific "big data" and cloud applications to drive innovation in global collaborative research. The intent is to strengthen the nation's position as a global leader in research and education for decades to come, and at the same time help control higher education costs. ...more
